Editing test cases

Edit a test case to change the information, such as the steps to perform. When you edit a test case, related manual test runs are not updated to reflect the changes. You must generate new manual test runs or regenerate manual test runs to use the updated test case. See Generating manual test runs and Regenerating manual test runs.

If you need to update field values for multiple test cases, use bulk change fields to update multiple items simultaneously. See Bulk changing fields to update multiple items.

1. In the Test Cases list window, select the test case and click Edit. You can also choose Edit > Edit.

The Edit Test Case dialog box opens.

Icons may indicate the item is locked or marked as suspect. See About item status indicators.

2. Make any changes.

  • The left pane displays General and Custom Fields values. The available fields and grouping depends on how Helix ALM is configured for your team. To learn more, see Configuring field layouts.
    • To scroll to a field group, click Scroll to fields and select a field group.
    • To expand a field group, click . To collapse a group, click . To expand all groups, click . To collapse all groups, click .
    • If information is available about a field group, mouse over to display a tooltip.
  • The right pane displays the following tabs:

Manual Test Runs Manual test runs generated for the test case, organized by status (Waiting, In Progress, and Completed). Viewing manual test run status
Email Email sent about the test case. You can reply to email. Only available if email tracking is enabled for the project. Viewing email and Replying to email
Links Items linked to the test case. You can add, edit, delete, and diagram links, mark linked items as suspect to indicate they may be impacted by change, and clear or investigate suspect dependencies. Working with item links
Folders Folders the test case is included in. You can add the test case to other folders, move it to different folders, or remove it from folders. You cannot add or move the test case to public folders you do not have permission to modify or are locked, or locked private folders. You cannot remove the test case from locked folders. History Historical information about the test case, such as when it was created, when it was last modified, and all actions performed on it. Viewing item history

3. Click Generate Manual Test Runs to generate manual test runs for the test case.

Manual test runs contain all information from the related test case, but also include the results of a specific instance of the test. See Generating manual test runs.

4. Click Send Email to email a user about the test run. See Emailing from Helix ALM.

5. Click Watch to be notified every time the test case changes. See Watching issues to be notified about changes.

6. Save the test case.

  • Click OK to save and close the test case.
  • Click Apply to save and continue working on the test case.
If the changes impact linked or related items, you may want to mark the items as suspect. This flags the items to indicate they should be reviewed. See Marking items as suspect.
