Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Find answers to frequently asked questions about P4 One.

Who is P4 One designed for?

P4 One is built for 2D/3D artists and graphic designers who want to keep track of their project versions. As a project grows, project folders can become messy and cluttered. P4 One helps with file management and makes version control simple and accessible.

Can P4 One be used for code development?

Artists and designers are our primary users, but P4 One is a P4 client and can be used for managing code. We do not currently have built-in features for resolving conflicts or merging, but they will be available in the future.

Does P4V replace P4 One?

No, the P4 Visual Client (P4V) is in active development and will continue to be offered as a P4 client like P4 One. If you currently use P4V and are interested in a simplified workflow, try out P4 One. You can switch between both clients if you prefer.

P4 One, P4V, and P4 plugins all work together seamlessly in terms of changelists and local workspaces, but they may all work in slightly different ways on the same computer. For example, you can use P4 One to work locally and create versions that are not submitted to a P4 Server, but P4V and plugins will not know about those local versions. After a changelist is on the P4 Server, it can be synced between the tools.

Does P4 One have the same asset management and metadata tracking as P4 DAM?

Like P4 One, P4 DAM uses a P4 Server to store assets, so your team can use both P4 One and P4 DAM to manage the same projects depending on your needs. We are working to make the P4 One and P4 DAM integration more seamless.

Does P4 One require an internet connection?

No, you do not need an internet connection to use P4 One. All files and versions of your project are stored locally on your computer. You only need an internet connection to access links to online resources from the P4 One user interface or if you want to work connected to a remote P4 Server.

Is a P4 Server required to use P4 One for versioning?

No. You can use P4 One for free locally and without a P4 Server. If you decide to use a P4 Server for collaboration and secure storage, you can set it up and start using it without losing your local versions.

I already have a P4 Server. Do I need to configure anything special on the server to use it with P4 One?

No, P4 One works with your existing server configuration without any special setup. Make sure you are using a supported version of P4 Server. To learn more, see System requirements.

Which P4 Server depot types are supported?

P4 One supports P4 stream and local (classic) depots.

Where does P4 One keep all my file versions?

P4 One stores file versions in a hidden folder inside the project workpsace folder. For each version, P4 One only stores files that changed since the last version.

Which files does P4 One support?

P4 One supports all file types and has preview and thumbnail support for a variety of 2D and 3D file types. To learn more, see File type support.

Does P4 One support syncing with P4 workspaces?

Yes, you can use your existing P4 workspaces that you set up with either P4V or P4 CLI with P4 One. Stream and local (classic) depots are supported. To learn more, see Connect an existing workspace to a P4 Server.

Can I sync my P4 One workspace from other tools, such as Unreal Game sync?

Yes, but only if you are using P4 One with P4 Server. P4 One is a client for P4 Server, so syncing should work as expected. You need to submit changes to a P4 Server and then pull the changes down from the tool you are using. If you are only storing local versions and not submitting to a P4 Server, tools running on the same computer cannot see the changes.

What are the storage hardware requirements for P4 One?

You will experience the best performance using SSD or NVMe storage on your computer.

How do I uninstall P4 One?

To learn how to uninstall P4 One, see Uninstall P4 One.
