Manage comments
Comments can be marked as read or unread, archived, and restored. These actions help you keep track of review discussions and focus on the comments that require attention.
On this page:
Unread comments
P4 Code Review displays unread comments as X/Y, where X is the number of unread comments and Y is the total number of comments.
The unread comment count is specific to the logged-in user.
Unread comment counts are displayed on the review page, in file headers, and on the Comments tab. The unread comment count is updated automatically as comments are read.
Mark comments as read
When you mark a comment as read, the comment is collapsed into a single line to save space and make unread comments easier to identify. The read status is tracked separately for each user.
You can mark all comments as read, or just a single comment.
To mark a single comment as read:
-
Click Mark comment as read to the right of the comment.
-
The comment is collapsed into a single line.
Marking a parent comment as read does not mark any child comments as read.
To mark all comments as read:
-
Click Review actions.
-
Select Mark all comments read.
-
All comments in the review are collapsed into single lines.
This marks all comments in a review as read, including description comments.
Mark comments as unread
Marking a comment as unread expands the comment so that its content is visible.
If a comment is marked as read and the comment changes, P4 Code Review automatically marks the comment as unread.
The comment Read status is cleared back to Unread when:
-
Comment text is edited.
-
Comment attachments are added or removed.
-
A comment is flagged as a task.
-
A task is reopened.
-
A comment or task is restored from the archive.
To learn more about tasks, see Comment tasks .
To mark a single comment as unread:
-
Click Mark comment as unread to the right of the comment.
-
The comment content is expanded.
Marking a parent comment as unread does not mark any child comments as unread.
To mark all comments as unread:
-
Click Review actions.
-
Select Mark all comments unread.
-
The content of all comments in the review is expanded.
This marks all comments in a review as unread, including description comments.
Archive comments
As a review progresses, comments made on earlier versions of a file can become less useful. Archiving comments helps reduce clutter and makes it easier to focus on active discussions.
Archived comments are hidden from view but are not deleted.
When a comment is archived, it is archived for all P4 Code Review users.
Archive a comment
To archive a comment:
-
Click Comment actions on the comment you want to archive.
-
Select Archive.
Archived comments are hidden from view.
The number of archived comments is displayed in the Archived comments button at the top of the Comments tab.
Show or hide archived comments
To display or hide archived comments:
-
Open the Comments tab.
-
Click Archived comments.
The button toggles the archived comment display on and off.
Restore comments
Archived comments can be restored if they need to be referenced again or returned to an active discussion.
When a comment is restored, it is restored for all P4 Code Review users.
If an archived comment has replies, the replies are restored with the parent comment.
Restore a comment
To restore a comment:
-
Open the Comments tab.
-
Click Archived comments to display archived comments.
-
Locate the comment you want to restore.
-
Click Restore on the comment.
What happens when comments are restored?
When a comment is restored:
-
The comment is visible again.
-
Any archived replies are restored with the parent comment.
-
The comment is automatically marked as unread for users who had previously marked it as read.
To learn more about comment replies, see Comment threading.
