Recording actions
You can record actions against running applications or start an application to record against.
1. Select the Target type you want to record against. The available fields and options depend on the target type.

Internet Explorer | URL | Enter the URL to open a web application in the selected browser. Chrome and Firefox are no longer supported as targets, but you can use them if you select Allow unsupported browsers as target in the Options dialog box. See Setting general options. |
Java application | Java application | Enter the Java application path or click Browse to locate the file. |
Working directory | Enter the application directory path. This field is automatically populated if you browsed to locate the file. | |
Java launcher | Enter the application executable filename or click Browse to locate the file. This field is only enabled for .jar files and is automatically populated if you browsed to locate the file. | |
Command line arguments | Enter any arguments to control how the application behaves when Defect Scribe starts it. | |
Windows 8 application | Windows 8 application | Select the Windows 8-style application you want to record against. This target is only available when using Defect Scribe on Windows 8. |
Windows application | Executable path | Enter the executable path or click Browse to locate the executable. |
Working directory | Enter the application directory path. This field is automatically populated if you browsed to locate the executable. | |
Command line arguments | Enter any arguments to control how the application behaves when Defect Scribe starts it. |
2. Click Record.
The application starts and the recording toolbar opens. The recording toolbar automatically hides a few seconds after recording starts if it is docked at the edge of the screen. To display the toolbar, mouse over . To prevent hiding the toolbar, drag the Defect Scribe icon away from the edge of the screen.
3. Navigate through the application, performing the actions you want to record.
- Click the Comment recording toolbar button to add a comment about an action. See Adding comments.
- Click the Pause recording toolbar button to pause recording. Click the button again to resume recording.
Note: Click the Cancel recording toolbar button to cancel recording and discard all recorded actions.
4. When you are finished, click the Stop recording toolbar button.
The recording is processed and captured actions and screenshots open in the Results dialog box. See Working with results.
