Overview

Following is an overview of the steps to complete before your team can start using Helix Core. Details are included in the help topic links for each step.

  1. Download and install essential clients.

To get started, download and install the following clients to work with Helix Core:

    • Helix Core Visual Client (P4V)

    • Administration Client (P4Admin)

    • Command-Line Client (P4)

    • Merge and Diff Tool (P4Merge)

  2. Set up a typemap using P4.

A typemap is a guide for all the file types used across your projects. Creating a typemap before you start working lets Helix Core identify which files to store as binary or text, which files to exclusively lock, and more.

  3. Create your first depot using P4Admin.

Think of a depot as your parent project folder. It is the highest level of organization and stores all versioned files. You will usually have one depot per project.

  4. Set up streams using P4V.

Streams are the preferred way to branch and merge. They provide a framework to manage concurrent development and track relationships visually across branches.

  5. Create your first workspace using P4V.

A workspace links a stream to a team member’s computer and gives them access to files. Every Helix Core user on your team will create one or more workspaces.

  6. Create users and specify permissions using P4Admin.

Helix Core permissions are highly configurable to provide the peace of mind and security you need. Create user accounts and define access and permissions at a file level.

  7. Optionally add features to your subscription.

Add features to your Helix Core Cloud subscription to enhance your team’s experience. For example, add Helix Swarm to unite your team to do more effective code reviews.

  8. Onboard your team and version at scale.

Successfully onboard your team with resources that introduce Helix Core and explain how to integrate other tools in your workflow.
