Connecting items

A cornerstone in the project planning is to create connections between related items, also known as logical dependencies. This enables you to clarify where items are dependent on each other, and lets you work with multiple related items at once without having to move them individually.

You can connect two items by clicking one of them in the timeline view and then dragging the cursor onto another item. When you release the mouse button, the two items will be connected, indicated by an arrow.

You can not create illogical dependencies. If you attempt to create a connection that is not possible, a red error message will appear to inform you.

The item to which the arrow is pointing is the successor, and will now be dependent on the first item, the predecessor. By default, this means that the start date for the successor will always be later than the end date of the predecessor.

This is referred to as an "end to start" connection, but there are other types of connections as well. You can access these by right-clicking it and hovering over Change connection to:

  • End to start - The predecessor's end date must be earlier than (or the same as) the successor's start date.
  • End to end - The predecessor's end date must be earlier than (or the same as) the successor's end date.
  • Start to end - The predecessor's start date must be earlier than (or the same as) the successor's start date.
  • Start to start - The predecessor's start date must be earlier than (or the same as) the successor's start date.

You can also set the minimum number of days that should separate the two specified dates. You do this by right-clicking the connection and selecting Set lead/lag time and entering the number of days.

To delete a connection, right-click it and select Delete this connection.
