Because JViews Maps is built on top of JViews Diagrammer and JViews Framework, you should use the accessibility techniques described either in JViews Diagrammer (for symbols) or in JViews Framework (for background maps).

Additionally, you can use the layer styling APIs to set a different style controller (see IlvMapStyleController) with a different set of colors, or color filters (see IlvColorAttributeFilter), to dynamically filter the various styling elements in the background layers.
