2.1 Overview

Rogue Wave's Software Parts Manager (SPM) distinguishes between the process of installing software and the process of building software.

Installing software means transferring software from its compressed form on a delivery medium-a CD, a floppy disk, or a web distribution file-to an organized set of files in predictable directories on your own hard drive. We refer to these files and directories as the parts directory structure.

Building software means using the SPM configuration and build mechanism to do two things: export the files needed for the build to a designated workspaces directory structure, and build the library.

This chapter describes the parts and workspaces directory structures, and the naming conventions of the files they contain.
