Using dimensions

Japanese version

Dimensions are used to group items by some property (for example Bug Severity or Assigned User)

Dimensions are selected by dragging a dimension from the list of available dimensions up to the active dimension area:

Dimension options

Each dimension has a number of options that can be configured. To access a dimensions options click on the dimension itself.

Different dimension types have their own specific set of options that are covered below. There is one option that is global to the chart being edited: Suppress zero values.

When enabled Suppress zero values removes all rows who are all either zero or null.

Dimension types

Historical data

Historical data is only valid in the first dimension slot. When specified, historical data causes the chosen measures to be sampled once each night. The chart will now become a time series showing you the value of the chosen measures at each sampled point in time, including their current values.

The historical data dimension allows you to specify a time range from which to display results. This can be specified as either an exact range (e.g. 2014-01-10 to 2014-02-10) or the last X days, weeks, months, quarters or years.

Click the historical data dimension to view the dropdown options. Select Set date range to bring up this dialog:

You can also specify a quantization for the displayed data. This allows you to view data aggregated into days, weeks, months, quarters or years.

Forecasting can be used to show a prediction of measure values for some time period in the future:

Forecasting can be calculated either from a weighted average over a specified number of days or by using a user supplied velocity value.

Pipelines, Kanbans, and workflows

The Pipeline, Kanban or Workflow dimensions allows you to group items by both the pipeline, kanban or workflow they have set and the individual status of the item within the pipeline, kanban or workflow. This dimension shares the same options as discrete project column dimensions (shown below).

Project columns

All non-numeric and non-textual columns from your projects will be available to select as dimensions, including suitable custom columns. There are three main types of project column dimensions: discrete dimensions that represent a column with discrete value choices (e.g. any drop list column), user dimensions (such as Assigned to) that represent a column holding one or more users and date dimensions that represent a column that stores a date and time (e.g. Last commented on). There are a couple of unique dimensions that are not covered by these three types and they are covered individually below.

Discrete dimensions

All discrete dimensions support the same basic options.

Option Description
Filter Limit the set of groups created to a specific set of values.
Sort natural Sort dimension groups in natural order(e.g by severity, priority or alphabetic order depending on the dimension type).
Sort numeric Sort dimension groups by numerical value.
Sort ascending/Sort descending By choosing descending you will reverse the sorting order for each group included in the selected dimension.

User dimensions

User dimensions share the same options as discrete dimensions but they add an additional option: Expand user groups to users.

When a user column references a user it by default also references all groups that the user is a member of. By default "Expand users groups to users" is enabled which causes these groups to be expanded (replaced) by their individual members. To include the groups themselves in the results disable this option.

Time dimensions

Time dimensions allow you to group items by the date stored in the column and aggregate in different ways.

Option Description
Set date range Set the range for the dates that you want included. This can be automatically calculated from the data, an explicit date range or a date range relative to the current date.

Days, Weeks ,Months, Quarters or Years View data quantitized/aggregated into days, weeks, months, quarters or years.
Suppress zero values Removes all values that are either 0 or Null. This setting will affect all dimensions in your chart.

Other dimensions

Workflow status set by user

Workflow status set by user works similarly to the Pipeline, Kanban or Workflow discrete dimension. However Workflow status set by user allows you to group by both workflow status and the last user to have set that status. For this to work you are required to have both the workflow status set by user dimension and a user dimension (e.g Users or User groups). By default Workflow status set by user does not include any workflow statuses so it is important to select filter and specify which workflows you are interested in seeing.

Workflow status set on date

Workflow status set on date allows you to group by the time at which a chosen workflow status was last set. For this to work you are required to match it with a Pipeline, Kanban or Workflow dimension.

The workflow status set on date dimension uses the same options as a time project column. The paired Pipeline, Kanban or Workflow dimension allows you to include only workflow statuses you are interested in.

Projects

The projects dimension allows you to group by the project an item is a member of. It has the same options as discrete project column dimension.

Releases/milestones

The Releases / Milestones dimension allows you to group by the release / milestone an item is a member of. It has the same options as discrete project column dimension.

Sprints/iterations

The Sprints / Iterations dimension allows you to group by the sprint an item is a member of. It has the same options as discrete project column dimension.

User groups

The User groups dimension allows you to group items by the user groups the assigned user is a member of.

It can be combined with the Workflow status set by user column.

Users

The Users dimension allows you to group items by the users assigned to them.

It can be combined with the Workflow status set by user column.
