Using the Hansoft Backup Service

The Hansoft Backup Service is designed to back up Hansoft databases larger than 100 GB. When the service creates a backup, it freezes the databases it is configured to back up, takes a snapshot, unfreezes the databases, and then runs a full backup on the snapshot copy. These backups include project history and documents.

The backup service is only available for Windows. Use the built-in backup tool if Hansoft is hosted on a different operating system. See Scheduling automatic database backups.

Tip:  In addition to using the backup service, we also recommend that you keep doing regular database snapshots, as this will help to keep the transaction log from growing too big.

1. Download the backup service installer.

2. Run the installer.

3. Accept the license agreement and click Next to continue through the installation options.

The default installation directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\Hansoft\Backup Service.

4. Click Install to start the installation.

The BackupServiceSettings.txt file automatically opens. This file contains information the service needs to back up databases. You can make can make any changes immediately or later. See Editing the Hansoft Backup Service settings file. If you make changes, save the file.

5. Close the settings file and the installer.

The backup service starts. See the Windows help for information about starting and stopping services.

Tip:  The backup service logs information and errors about backups. See Editing the Hansoft Backup Service settings file.
