Change your password

Overview

Regular password updates help maintain account security and ensure compliance with your organization's security requirements.

P4 Server administrators can enforce password policies, including minimum password length, password complexity, and required password strength. Depending on the configured security level, your password might need to meet specific complexity requirements before the P4 Server accepts it.

Prerequisites

Before you change your password:

  • You must be connected to a P4 Server.

  • You must know your current password.

  • Your new password must comply with your P4 Server's password policy.

Limitations

  • Password requirements vary depending on the server security configuration.

  • At security level 2 or higher, a strong password is required.

  • Minimum password length is configurable by the administrator through the dm.password.minlength configurable.

  • Passwords that contain unsupported characters might cause character set mismatches between servers and clients.

Password requirements

To improve security, create passwords that:

  • Use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters.

  • Include numbers.

  • Include special characters such as #, %, and &.

  • Meet the minimum length required by your server administrator.

Supported characters

To avoid character set mismatches between servers and clients, use printable ASCII characters (32–126) when creating passwords. Other characters might not be supported consistently across server and client environments.

The recommended printable ASCII character range is 32 through 126, including:

  • Letters (A–Z, a–z)

  • Numbers (0–9)

  • Spaces

  • Standard punctuation and symbols

Examples include:

Use the password management tasks to maintain account security and comply with the P4 Server password policies.

Change your password

Change your password when your password expires, when prompted by your administrator, or whenever you want to improve account security.

  1. Go to Connection > Change Password​.

  2. In the Change Password dialog, enter your current password.

  3. Enter your new password.

  4. Re-enter the new password to confirm it.

  5. Click OK.

What's next

After you change your password:

  • Verify that you can reconnect to the P4 Server using your new password.

  • Update any automated scripts or tools that use stored credentials.

  • Review password requirements if the P4 Server rejects your new password.
