Troubleshoot checking out files

When I try to check out a file from Perforce P4 Server,I get an error stating that the "newest version in the P4 depot has been deleted." What does this mean?

The file that you are trying to check out has been deleted from Perforce P4 Server. If you are familiar with P4 Server, you can use P4V or the P4 Server command-line client to undo the delete. If you are not familiar with P4 Server, contact your P4 Server administrator.

You cannot access this file in P4 Server until the file has been recovered.
