Setting general local options

You can set options for logging in, opening multiple instances of Helix ALM, and limiting memory used when integrating with Microsoft Excel and Word.

1. Choose Tools > Local Options then select the General category.

2. Select Always log in to this server with this username and password to automatically log in to the current server.

3. Select Always log in to this project to automatically log in to the current project when Helix ALM starts.

4. Select Allow multiple instances of this application to allow more than one instance of Helix ALM to run on your computer.

5. Enter the Test Case Management Automated Scripts Directory path or click Browse to select it.

Scripts are run from the ScheduledScripts directory in the Helix ALM application directory on Windows and the Perforce home directory on Unix by default. Change the directory if you do not have permission to modify these directories or you want to run scripts from a different location.

6. Set options for Microsoft Word and Excel memory and Java Virtual Machine (JVM) use.

  • Enter the number of megabytes to Limit memory use to for the JVM when exporting and importing to and from Microsoft Word, and opening Helix ALM items in Microsoft Excel. You may need to increase the memory if Java errors occur when using Word or Excel features in Helix ALM. The default is 512 MB.
  • If a Java Runtime path is not set, click Browse to select the path. The default paths are:
    • Windows — 32-bit: jre directory in the application directory (e.g., C:\Program Files\Perforce\Helix ALM\jre); 64-bit: jre64 directory in the application directory (e.g, C:\Program Files\Perforce\Helix ALM\jre64).
    • macOS — jre directory in the application directory (e.g., /Applications/HelixALM/jre).
    • Linux — 32-bit: No default. A path must be set. 64-bit: jre64 directory in the application directory (e.g.,/var/lib/HelixALM/jre64).

Note:  This option only applies to Excel exports and Word exports from the Classic tab in the Export to Microsoft Word dialog box. The administrator can adjust memory usage for regular Word exports in the registry utility. See the Registry Utility help for information about changing memory use settings.

7. Click OK to save the changes.
