Checking out source files
Note: Source file actions and options depend on the source control application you are using. The following information applies to Surround SCM and Helix Versioning Engine. If you use a different application, refer to its documentation for information.
Check out source files attached to items when you need to make changes. A read-write copy of the file is retrieved and you can edit the local copy.
When you check out a file, a read-write copy is retrieved to the working directory. You can edit the local copy and then check it in when you are done. See Checking in or submitting source files.
You cannot check out a file if a user has it checked out exclusively or if it is already checked out and Surround SCM does not allow multiple check outs.
1. Click the Source Files tab when you are editing an item. The Source Files tab is on the Files tab in requirements, documents, test cases, and manual test runs.
2. Select the files and click Check Out.
The Check Out Files dialog box opens.
3. Enter any Comments, such as the reason for checking out the files.
4. Select Only show dialog if Shift key is pressed to only display the dialog box again if the Shift key is pressed. Select this option to use the same options when checking out files.
5. Select Exclusive check out to prevent other users from checking out the files. This option is only available if multiple check outs are allowed.
6. Select any additional options. See the Surround SCM help for information about checking out files.
7. Click OK to check out the files.
When you check out a file, it is automatically added to a pending Helix Versioning Engine changelist. You can edit the local copy and then submit it to the depot when you are done. See Checking in or submitting source files.
